Exploding Plastic Inevitable

The Exploding Plastic Inevitable was a series of multimedia events organized by Andy Warhol between 1966 and 1967, featuring musical performances by Lou Reed's fledgling band The Velvet Underground, an arch German chanteuse named Nico, screenings of Mr. Warhol's experimental films, and other assorted weirdness. It was also at this time that The Velvet Underground started wearing dark glasses on stage – not through trying to be cool, but because the light-show was so blinding. The EPI toured the US but was dogged by poor audience reactions, police intervention and other mishaps (including the suicide of its lighting designer). The final show was held in April 1967, by which time Nico had left. Inevitable…
