This design was inspired by a Simpsons episode called "Girls Just Want to Have Sums," written by Matt Selman. In the episode Principal Skinner makes a chauvinistic remark towards a former female student, and an uproar ensues, prompting his demotion. A woman is appointed as the new principal of Springfield Elementary, and she divides the school into two sections, one for boys, and the other for girls. On the girls' side of the school, Lisa is frustrated by her feminist teacher's touch-feely approach to Math: "What color is seven? How does a percentage sign make you feel?" On the wall of the classroom is the nonsensical equation "xx = xy."
The remarks that get Skinner in trouble are based on the real-life incident in 2005 incident when Harvard president Larry Summers observed (correctly) that women don't do as well as men in the hard sciences -- and was forced to resign as a result.
